Temperament

Calm, friendly, and quietly independent. Wegies enjoy company without demanding it — they'll supervise from a perch, accept affection graciously, and keep a dignified reserve with strangers. Gentle with children and patient with other pets, they're an easy fit for family life.

Climbing Is the Lifestyle

The breed's signature need: serious vertical territory. Tall, stable cat trees, cleared shelf routes, and window perches let them live at the altitude their tree-climbing heritage expects. Ground-floor-only living frustrates them.

Grooming

The weatherproof double coat is easier than it looks: brushing twice weekly most of the year, daily during the dramatic spring molt when the woolly undercoat releases. Mats are rare outside molt season — this coat maintained itself in Norwegian forests, after all.

Activity & Enrichment

Moderate: hunting-style play sessions, puzzle feeders, and those climbing highways. They mature slowly — expect kitten playfulness until age four or five.

Generally hardy: screened lines matter for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), hip dysplasia, and glycogen storage disease IV (a DNA-testable rarity). Watch weight — a big frame hides extra pounds easily (body-condition check).
