How the conversion actually works
The first year of a dog or cat’s life is a sprint to adulthood — roughly equivalent to 15 human years. Year two adds about nine more. From there, each year adds roughly four to seven human years depending on size: small dogs and cats age slowest, giant breeds fastest, which is why a Great Dane is a senior at six while a Chihuahua is still middle-aged at ten.
Why life stage matters more than the number
The useful output isn’t the human-year figure — it’s the life stage, which sets the care agenda: growth diets and first-year milestones for the young, weight and dental maintenance through adulthood, and twice-yearly checkups plus senior adjustments for the golden years.
