Recall Training: How to Teach Your Dog to Come When Called

Recall is the one cue that can save your dog's life — and the one owners accidentally sabotage most. Here's how to build a "come" that beats squirrels, and the traps that break it.

The Golden Rules (Read These First)

1. Coming to you is always the best thing that ever happened. Every single recall pays — jackpot treats, party voice, play.
2. Never call for something the dog hates. Baths, nail trims, leaving the park: go collect the dog instead. One "come = fun ends" lesson costs weeks.
3. Never punish a slow recall. Scolding a dog that finally came teaches that coming is dangerous. Pay the arrival, always.
4. Don't spend the cue. Repeating "come, come, COME" at a dog who isn't coming teaches that the word is optional background noise. Say it once, when you can win.

Stage 1: The Name & Catch Game (Week 1)

Indoors, zero distractions: say the name, mark the head-turn, treat. Then the catch game — toss a treat away, and as your dog finishes it, say your recall word and reward the return lavishly. Ten reps, twice daily. You're building an automatic head-snap to the word.

Stage 2: Hallway to Yard (Weeks 2–4)

Add distance indoors, then move to a boring outdoor space on a long line (10–15m — never retractable). Recall, pay hugely, release back to sniffing — the release matters: recall shouldn't mean fun is over. Sprinkle in "surprise recalls" mid-walk.

Stage 3: Proofing Against the Real World (Months 2–6)

Raise one difficulty at a time: distance, then mild distractions (a person nearby), then hard ones (other dogs at range). The long line stays on until your dog is 9-for-10 at each level — the line isn't failure, it's a seatbelt. Raise your pay with the difficulty: kitchen kibble loses to squirrels; chicken competes (reward math).

The Emergency Recall

Train a separate word ("NOW!" or a whistle) used rarely, paid absurdly (a whole handful of the best thing), and never, ever spent casually. This is the fire extinguisher — practiced monthly, deployed for real emergencies only.

Breed Honesty

Some dogs cap out: Beagles on a scent, Huskies with a horizon, and Shibas on principle should enjoy long lines and fenced parks for life. That's management, not failure — a fact every honest trainer will tell you.
