The Siberian Husky is one of the most beautiful dogs on Earth — and one of the most frequently surrendered, because the packaging writes checks the lifestyle must cash.

Temperament

Friendly with everyone (terrible guard dogs), playful, mischievous, and famously independent. Huskies were bred to run and think for themselves, not to hang on human instruction — expect a charming roommate, not an obedient employee.

Exercise: The Whole Deal

Extreme: 90+ minutes daily of hard exercise, ideally running, plus mental work. An under-exercised Husky redecorates drywall, excavates yards, and serenades the neighborhood. This need is daily, year-round, in all weather — the single factor to be honest with yourself about.

The Escape Artist Clause

Huskies climb, dig under, and open latches. Six-foot fencing with dig guards, supervised yard time, and leashes everywhere else. Microchip and ID tag from day one.

Grooming

The dense double coat sheds year-round and blows out spectacularly twice yearly — daily brushing in season, a serious vacuum always. Never shave; the coat is climate control in both directions (summer care).

Training Notes

Smart but self-directed: positive reinforcement with excellent rewards, short fun sessions, and realistic expectations. Recall is a lifelong project, never a guarantee.

Health Considerations

Generally hardy: watch hips, eyes (cataracts, PRA), and zinc-responsive skin conditions. Keep them lean and conditioned — this is an athlete's body.
