Havanese Breed Guide

The Havanese — Cuba's national dog — is a silk-coated charmer engineered over centuries for exactly one job: being delightful company. It is very good at its job.

Temperament

Cheerful, gentle, and people-devoted without the fragility or yappiness of many toy breeds. Havanese are sturdy little clowns: good with children, sociable with strangers and pets, and famous for the "Havana silk" springy gait and circus-dog trick ability.

The Companion Clause

Like the Cavapoo, they were bred to be with people — long solo days are genuinely hard on them. Build alone-time tolerance early and honestly assess your schedule.

Exercise Needs

Modest: daily walks plus lively play sessions. They adapt beautifully to apartment rhythm and make enthusiastic trick-training students — clicker work is their favorite sport.

Grooming

The long silky double coat needs brushing every other day, or a puppy cut every 6–8 weeks for easier life. It sheds very little either way — a top allergy-friendly choice alongside the Shih Tzu and Yorkie. Check ears weekly; watch tear staining.

Health Considerations

A relatively healthy toy breed: watch patellar luxation, hip dysplasia (yes, even small dogs), eye conditions, and deafness in some lines. Lifespan commonly 13–16 years.
