Cavapoo Breed Guide

The Cavapoo — Cavalier King Charles Spaniel × Poodle — has become one of the most sought- after small companion dogs for a simple reason: it aims to combine the Cavalier's sweetness with the Poodle's brains and lower-shedding coat. Often, it succeeds.

Temperament

Gentle, affectionate, and eager to please — typically softer and less busy than a Goldendoodle, truer to the Cavalier's lap-dog heart with a dash of Poodle playfulness. They're famously good with children, seniors, and other pets.

The Companion-Breed Catch

Both parent breeds were built to be with people, and Cavapoos inherit that double: they're among the most separation-anxiety-prone mixes we cover. Practice alone-time training from the first week, and think honestly about your absence hours before choosing this breed.

Exercise Needs

Moderate and flexible: a couple of daily walks plus play and short training games — which they excel at, thanks to the Poodle side. They adapt to your pace, making them superb apartment dogs.

Grooming

The soft, wavy coat mats easily: brushing to the skin 3+ times weekly plus professional grooming every 6–8 weeks. Like all doodles, "low-shedding" and "low-maintenance" are opposites. Clean and check the floppy, hair-lined ears weekly.

Health Considerations

Watch both parents' lists: mitral valve disease (Cavalier side — ask for cardiac-cleared parents; this one matters most), patellar luxation, eye conditions, and ear infections. Choose breeders who test both parents, or look at Cavapoo/doodle rescues.

Is a Cavapoo Right for You?

Nearly ideal for first-time owners, families, and apartment dwellers who are home a fair amount and will fund the grooming schedule. If long solo days are your reality, a more independent breed will be kinder to everyone.
