Bernese Mountain Dog Breed Guide

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a Swiss farm dog wrapped in a tricolor plush coat — calm, devoted, magnificent in snow, and attached to its family like gravity.

Temperament

Gentle, easygoing, and deeply people-bonded. Berners are famously good with children (supervised — leaning is a breed sport and they weigh a hundred pounds), welcoming to guests after a dignified assessment, and miserable when excluded from family life. They're indoor dogs with outdoor hobbies, not yard dogs.

Exercise Needs

Moderate: daily walks, play, and — their heritage joy — hiking and cart-pulling. Like all giants, limit strenuous exercise during the long growth phase, and treat heat as a real constraint: this coat was engineered for the Alps.

Grooming

The thick tricolor double coat sheds seriously year-round with seasonal avalanches: brushing 2–3 times weekly (daily in season), and a vacuum with commitment. Never shave.

Training

Willing and soft-natured: gentle positive methods work beautifully; harshness crushes them. Train leash manners before adult mass arrives.

Health & Lifespan

The hard conversation: Berners carry among the highest cancer rates of any breed (histiocytic sarcoma especially), plus hip/elbow dysplasia and bloat risk. Lifespan of 7–10 years is the breed's tax. Choose rigorously health-tested lines, keep them lean, and consider insurance from puppyhood.
