Cats choose scratching surfaces by three criteria — and your couch aces all of them: stable (doesn't wobble), tall enough for a full stretch, and prominently located in the social heart of the home. Most rejected scratching posts fail the same test: short, tippy, and exiled to a corner nobody visits. Beat the couch by out-competing it, not by hiding the alternative.

Build the Better Offer

• Height & stability: a post taller than your cat at full stretch (75cm+), heavy-based enough to lean into hard. Wobble = instant rejection.
• Texture: sisal rope beats carpet for most cats; add a horizontal cardboard scratcher — many cats use both styles.
• Placement is everything: directly next to the crime scene, plus one near the main sleeping spot (cats scratch on waking, reliably). After the habit transfers — weeks, not days — migrate the post gradually, a foot at a time, if you must.
• Make it valuable: catnip rub, wand-toy play that ends on the post, and treats for spontaneous use.

Protect the Furniture Meanwhile

Double-sided sticky tape or a fitted plastic guard on the scratched corner makes the couch unpleasant exactly while the post nearby is wonderful — the contrast does the teaching. Regular nail trims blunt the damage, and vinyl nail caps bridge the training period for high-stakes furniture.

What Never Works

Yelling and spray bottles teach "scratch when the human isn't looking" plus a side of distrust. And declawing — amputation of the last toe bones — causes chronic pain, litter box aversion, and biting; major veterinary bodies oppose it and many jurisdictions ban it. It's not on the menu.
